Statement

One day, when I visited a zoo and looked at the animals’ eyes, I was struck by the sharpness and beauty of their eyes.
The dignity sparkled in their eyes instantly reminded me that they are originally wild animals.
Yet, I also witnessed the mixed expressions of loneliness, fear, stress and anger behind their eyes.
It was a powerful impact on me and this sight occupied my mind.

What do the complexed expressions mean, which they show from time to time?
In order to better understand their emotions, my journey to pursue their inner world was started.

In this project, I photograph most of the animals at the distance within one meter (approximately 3.3 feet).
It is important for me to be able to get close to the animals to feel what they are feeling.
The closer I come to them, the more I can directly sense their breath, power, emotions and aura just as the air we feel at a live show venue.

私が動物園を訪れ動物達と対峙した瞬間、鋭くそして美しい瞳に驚き、そして虜になった。
彼らの瞳には威厳があり、彼らが本来野生動物であるということを思い出された瞬間でもあった。
ただその瞳の奥や表情には、孤独や不安、ストレスや怒りなどのような様々な感情が入り混じったように感じられ、僕の心を締め付けた。

彼らが時折見せる複雑な表情や、瞳の奥に感じる違和感は一体何なのか。
彼らの心理を少しでも知りたいと感じ、彼ら内なる世界を探求する旅が始まった。

このプロジェクトではほとんどの動物を1m以内の極至近距離で撮影する。
少しでも動物達の感情を肌で感じる為に、動物との距離を大切にしている。
それは音楽のライブの様に、近ければ近いほど、想いやパワーの様な物が伝わってくると実感しているからだ。
様々な動物に近づける動物園を探す為、日本を中心としたアジアやヨーロッパ、アメリカ等、40ヶ所以上の動物園を点々と撮影を続けた。

全ては動物により近づく為に。感情を肌で感じる為に。

「目は口ほどにものをいう」

彼らの瞳はいったい何を物語っているのだろうか・・・
